A Change of Plans
Yesterday I was suppose to referee the game between USA and Bahamas. Unfortunately, it just wasn't to be. A couple of days ago I started to get a tickle in my throat. By Wednesday it was the full-blow flu complete with fever, body aches and hacking cough. After not getting any sleep Wednesday night, I felt so weak and exhausted. After speaking with the director of officials, it was decided that it was best to remove me from the game. You can imagine how disappointing and frustrating this was for me, but I knew it was the best decision for everyone involved. So now...I have to re-focus and get healthy so I am ready for my next opportunity.

Off to Guatemala
After a year and a half off...I am back in the saddle again! It is great to be appointed to the U17 World Cup Qualifier in Guatemala from May 2-12th. Of course it will be more difficult to be away from home now with my little girl, Andison being only 9 months old, but I am grateful to have such great family that is willing to help out. She will probably get more attention from her grandparents anyways!!
I left for Guatemala on Monday April 30th and had a relatively uneventful trip to Guatemala City. Trust me, uneventful is exactly what you want when you travel! I usually have bad luck with luggage, but...to my amazement....when I arrived, so did my bags! I was met by tournament organizers at the airport, who put me on this huge bus...all by myself...to go to the hotel. The hotel we are staying at is the Real Intercontinental and it is a very nice hotel (aside from all the guns and military personal outside). I am not sure yet about the safety factor yet, but my first impression is that it is a very beautiful country and the people are all very nice. Again, I wish my Spanish was better, but I will keep working on it while I am here.
This morning we were up at 6:15am to leave for training at "Project Goal", which I believe is the National Training Center for all the national teams. There are 4 or 5 fields there along with some dormitory-type buildings. We had a relatively short and easy training session...just to blow off the travel in our legs. It was so nice to be back on the field with all the fabulous ladies of CONCACAF! This afternoon we have our 1st tournament meeting where we will get all the critical tournament details, and the appointments for tomorrow. I will not be working as Canada is in Group A, therefore I will not referee any games in that group. So...for me...tomorrow is a LONG day at the stadium watching the matches. We will leave the hotel at 130pm, and arrive back sometime after 7pm (fingers crossed it's not too hot :)
